Why Is PPE So Important?

When in a workplace, employers must make sure that all employees have the required personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect them against health or safety risks. PPE equipment includes items such as helmets, eye protection, gloves, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear, RPE and many more products. PPE is vital to reduce accidents in the workplace.

Who Needs To Wear PPE?

You only need to use PPE equipment as a last resort. Before considering PPE equipment for your staff you need to make sure you have implemented all other controls first. If PPE is needed then you must make sure you train all staff on how to use the equipment properly and report any defects or faults.

Who Should Pay For PPE?

If items of Personal Protective Equipment are required they must be provided free of charge by the employer.

Do You Legally Have To Wear A Head Protection On A Construction Site?

In the majority of cases, yes. Construction sites are dangerous and the law states that head protection needs to be worn in case of head injuries. The law states to ensure all workers are provided with, and wear, suitable head protection.

This is necessary to comply with the Personal Protective Equipment Regulations 1992 which, from 6 April, applies to the provision and wearing of head protection on construction sites following the revocation of the Construction (Head Protection) Regulations 1989.
